In this time of the educational challenges in Nigeria, the management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, 21st century university properly called, enforce the policy of ‘No school fees, No Examination’.
Recall that in the past few years, when school fees was not up to ₦50,000 per session, students pay on time, but now the least school fees is ₦80,000. How do you expect a student whose parents are government workers to pay school fees on time when the so-called government are owing it’s workers 5-6 months salaries.
It is in the same school, students who sponsor themselves are, this policy is bad and nothing to write home about.
There is a popular saying, which says: ‘all fingers are not equal’, it’s not possible for all students to pay at once, since the circular spread out, some students will have be in depression because they don’t have hope of getting their school fees before the stipulated time. Even though the school fees is being increased, the level of development is low,as things are not the way it used to be when the school fees is not up to ₦50,000.
It saddens the heart that the management didn’t consider the less privileged amongst the students whereas some of the management and even the government enjoined scholarships and grants for school fees during their own time, during the 2020/2021 session examination period, this same policy came out then, some students turned into beggars pleading for help just to get their school fees. During that period, a student asked the then Dean of Students Affairs (DSA), Dr. Owolewa questions about the policy, his response was that “AAUA is a brand, not for low esteemed students”, how do you expect such student to feel & some students are still owing two semester school fees.
The governor of Ondo State, Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu once said the school fees of a student is not enough to buy him a pair of shoes, isn’t this too much, even some indigenes of Ondo State can not apply for AAUA just because of the high school fees.
This policy should be eradicated, those who have the money will surely pay, but those who don’t have it should be allowed to write their examinations, after all they still pay extra for the backend registration.
It will be a bad thing if students protest in the name of clamouring for their rights.
Scholars said if a country is good, check the standard of their education, and vice versa.
Poverty is one of our major problem in Nigeria, if there is need for making policies, consider poverty, as everyone is not from the high class.
Depression kills, suicide is there also, students killing themselves because of lack of school fees will bring the name of the school to black book, the management should be considerate.
