In moment like this, it is expedient for us to ask ourselves germane questions about the sovereignty and National integrity of this Nation called Nigeria.

In a Nation where two dominant region are agitating for secession, the Yorubas in the Southwest region of Nigeria are agitating for Yoruba Nation led by Sunday Igboho while the Igbos in the southeast region of Nigeria are agitating for Biafra Nation, IPOB (Indigenous People Of Biafra) led by Nnamdi Kanu.

The first question we need to ask from this agitators is that what is the motive behind this secessionist agitation, truly nobody on Earth is blind to see the parlous state of this Nation called Nigeria, a Nation where there is daylight kidnapping, banditry, terrorism and preferential treatment is given to this set of people than those who are ready to drive this Nation forward.

Once this question of motive is solved and this agitators can give a meaningful answers, not a baseless answer then we will arrive at a point.

However, what is Federalism?
Federalism basically means a system of government in which powers of government are shared between the central government and the component units.

Central government here connote the federal government of Nigeria while the component units implies the State government and the Local Government.

We have 3 Legislative List in Nigeria.

They are as follows

  • The Exclusive Legislative List.
  • The Concurrent Legislative List.
  • The Residual Legislative List.
  • The Exclusive Legislative List.
This has to do with the constitutional power given to the federal
    government to execute the Constitution.
  • The Concurrent legislative List.
This is the Constitutional powers shared between the federal government and the state government.
  • Residual legislative List.
In this aspect powers of government are shared between the state and local government.
  • The Way Forward To Federalism in Nigeria

With the description of Federalism above it is vivid that Federalism is all about power and adherence to the Constitution by the Federal Government , State Government and Local Government.

However I will proffer 2 Solutions to The Nigeria Federalism in this article.

They are as follows.

  • Constitutional Amendment.
  • Independence of The Judiciary.
  • Constitutional Amendment
The Nigeria 1999 Constitution needs to be amended to fit in the modern day Nigeria issues.
  • Independence Of The Judiciary.
The Judiciary needs to be independent from the Executive i.e appointment of Judges must be void of Executive Influence. The president or Governor must not be the one to appoint Judicial Officers. Promotion of Judicial Officers should be base on Merit and by years of experience, because if the appointment of Judicial Officers comes from the executive, the Judiciary will dance to the tune of the executive in the administration of Justice in Nigeria. A Panel needs to be setup within the Judiciary for proper Judicial Administration.

God Bless Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Nigeria @ 61.

Happy Independence Nigeria.
