The Nigerian Communications Commission has vowed that subscribers International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers would be captured automatically without them submitting to the agency.
Meanwhile, the FG has earlier signed a bill which is mandatory for all Nigerians to submit their IMEIs required by the regulatory agency in three months, the commission said it would capture the phone Identity numbers automatically without reference to subscribers.
In a statement issued by NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde, the commission said, “At no time did the commission issue a statement regarding the registration of IMEI by subscribers and it has no plans to do so.
Dr. Ikechukwu further emphasis that,” the commission is in the process of deploying a Device Management System.
“This development will protect subscribers against phone theft and will identify and would also enable the eradication of fake devices from the system.
Furthermore,Nigerians has opposed the submission of their phone IMEI to the government as they can not trust the government with their identity.
Comments on various social media platforms revealed that Nigerians are in doubt of the real intention of the government for asking them to submit their IMEI,while many are aggrieved that it could be used to track down the opposing voices.
